Hey there everyone! So, I'm looking to put together a decent little home server for me and my fiance to use Plex, as well as play some Minecraft every now and again. Thankfully, I've got quite a bit of older hardware lying around, and all of it should be reasonably sufficient to do both for a little home server.
That being said, I'm struck with a bit of a problem on determining which way to go. I've got three machines, a Dell Precision 490 with dual Xeon 5060 chips (dual core, 3.2 Ghz), a Mac Pro 1,1 with dual Xeon 5160 chips (dual core, 3.0 Ghz), and my old AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE (quad-core, 3.2 Ghz) build.
Now, they're all pretty old, and I certainly don't expect the world out of them in any capacity, but would any of them be any significantly better than another? I've also got the option to upgrade either the Mac Pro or the Dell to dual Xeon X5365 chips (quad-core, 3.0 Ghz) for about $50 which isn't all that much. Though the Xeon chips are probably going to be absolutely monstrous in terms of power consumption, and they're both limited to DDR2-667 RAM, which certainly works, but would that have any real effect on either Plex or Minecraft?
Anybody with any more real world experience have any insight?
