2.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor with 4MB shared L3 cache


This I assume is the processor you have:


Turbo Boost Technology 2.0


Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 is activated when the Operating System (OS) requests the highest processor performance state (P0).


The maximum frequency of Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 is dependent on the number of active cores. The amount of time the processor spends in the Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 state depends on the workload and operating environment.


Any of the following can set the upper limit of Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 on a given workload:



  • Number of active cores
  • Estimated current consumption
  • Estimated power consumption
  • Processor temperature


i7 (and i3/i5) have turbo boost but unless your apps require higher clock, it won't and in fact mine often run @ 25-50% (1600MHz instead of 3200) much of the time - to conserve power and reduce heat.


So you would need to be running Handbrake or something. And if you aren't running Windows not sure why this is even here.

Driver


I would not call a 2.3 though 'faster.'


Maybe the quad core MBP would do better (and 'faster').

OBSERVATIONS1. The Quad-Core i7 MacBook Pros were clearly faster than the Dual-Core i7 MacBook Pros.

I doubt it has to do with TB 2.0 but with the processor itself and being it is a dual-core model.
