For Windows 2000, Vista, XP:
  1. Turn on your computer system and allow it to boot to the desktop.

  2. Connect the power cord and USB cable to the external hard drive.

  3. Connect the USB cable to an available USB port on the computer system. The external hard drive will turn on automatically.

  4. Drive utilities and device drivers are installed automatically during the installation of the drive. If a security alert is displayed during the installation process, click on Accept or Continue.

  5. A menu will then display a list of bonus software utilities from Google™. Double-Click the Google™ options to begin installation; otherwise, click Quit to close the window. When finished, the hard drive is ready for usage and will be shown as a new drive letter under My Computer and Windows Explorer.
For Mac based computers: macOS X 10.3 Panther or later
Important: The included bonus software from Google™ is not compatible with Mac based computers. You will not be able to install or use these utilities.
  1. Turn on your computer system and allow it to boot to the desktop.

  2. Connect the power cord and USB cable to the external hard drive.

  3. Connect the USB cable to an available USB port on the computer system. The external hard drive will turn on automatically.

  4. The hard drive will be detected and installed automatically. A drive icon will be mounted to the desktop and the drive will be ready for use.
Please note, it may take up to 1 minute for the hard drive to mount to the Mac desktop.

    Instructions
    1. Disconnect all other external drives from the computer except one My Book or My Passport.
    2. Download WDFirmwareUpdater.zip to your desktop.
    3. Extract the file using an extraction utility.
    4. Once extracted, double-click on the file named WDFirmwareUpdater.zip
    5. Click 'Continue.'
    6. Click 'Accept' on EULA.
    7. Please wait a few minutes until the required update modules are downloaded.
    8. If the drive displayed is the correct drive, click 'Continue.'
    9. Please wait a few minutes while your drive’s firmware is updated.

    Instructions
    1. Download the Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, WinDlg_vx_xx.zip
    2. Extract and run the program, WinDlg_vx_xx.exe. If running Windows Vista (or later), you will need to Right-Click on the WinDlg_vx_xx.exe file and choose to Run As Administrator.
    3. Read and accept the license agreement to continue.
    4. On the main program screen, there are two windows. In the top window, you will see the drives in your system that are available for testing. The model number, serial number, capacity, and SMART status of each drive will be displayed. In the bottom window, the partition information for the selected drive will be displayed.
    5. Highlight the drive and select the icon on the top row to test or run SMART status.
    6. When you select the run tests icon, the 'DLGDIAG - Select an Option' window appears.
    7. You will see the following options:
      • QUICK TEST - performs SMART drive quick self-test to gather and verify the Data Lifeguard information contained on the drive.
      • EXTENDED TEST - performs a Full Media Scan to detect bad sectors. Test may take several hours to complete depending on the size of the drive.
      • ERASE - writes zeros to the drive with options of Full Erase and Quick Erase. File system and data will be lost.
      • VIEW TEST RESULT - displays the latest test results.
    8. Select the test you wish to perform and click the Start button.
    9. When the test completes, you will be notified with a pass/fail message. Click the Close button.
